Strong name, thin citations.
Domino's Pizza (58.2), Naukri.com (57.5) and Colgate (57.0) top the field — yet even the leaders show the pattern: strong branded presence, thin owned category citations.
NeuGenM Signal · AI (GEO/AEO) Performance Audit 2026
India's biggest brands appear almost every time a user asks about them — and almost never when a user asks about the category they compete in. That category answer, in AI, is still unclaimed in nearly every Indian market.
India's biggest brands have won their own name in AI and lost their category. Average branded presence is 99.2% but average category presence is only 12.4%; brands are recommended in 84.9% of their branded answers but just 3.0% of category answers.
The composite AI Pulse averages 43.0/100 — an AI Visibility Gap of 57% — and not one of the Top 100 cleared a B grade. This is not a threat readout; it is an open field for the brands that move first.

01 — Findings
The pattern is consistent across every engine, category and language audited.
99.2% branded vs 12.4% category presence. Recommendation collapses from 84.9% (branded) to 3.0% (category). Brands own their name, not their category — and the category is where undecided buyers are won.
0.4% average owned category citation authority. 62 of 100 brands sit at a flat 0% (84 under 1%). When AI answers a category question, it sources from third-party authority sites — not from the brand's own domain.
The 0% score is usually self-inflicted. The most common cause is a block — WAF/CDN 403s, bot-walls, redirects, missing or invalid schema — not a lack of content. That makes the first fix the cheapest and highest-impact one available.
~0.7% category citation across six Indic languages. As near-zero as English (~0.4%); branded vernacular (~19.4%) tracks English (~24.2%). The blackout is category-wide in every language, not deeper in vernacular.
GEO 4.2 · AEO 3.7 · SEO 5.7 (out of 10). Brands are far readier to answer for themselves (Q1 branded-exploratory 6.9/10) than for their category (Q3 unbranded-discovery 3.5/10).
02 — The field
A C-graded field, top to bottom: no brand earned an A or a B.
Domino's Pizza (58.2), Naukri.com (57.5) and Colgate (57.0) top the field — yet even the leaders show the pattern: strong branded presence, thin owned category citations.
The lowest-Pulse brands keep near-universal branded presence but collapse in-category — commonly 0% owned category citation. Empty citations, not empty shelves.
Telecom leads the larger categories (avg Pulse 50.7); Packaged Food (38.0) and Financial Services (40.0, n=20) trail. No category clears the readiness bar.
03 — The playbook
Six behaviours turn a mention into a citation into a recommendation.
No WAF/CDN 403 on AI crawlers; robots allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended.
Valid JSON-LD — Organization, Product, FAQ, Article, Offer — and fresh sitemaps.
Citable, comparison-shaped "best X" content — not just brand pages.
So equity and citations don't leak across .com / .in / sub-sites.
UCP/MCP endpoints backed by real structured product and offer cargo.
So a mention becomes a citation becomes a recommendation.
04 — The agenda
Sequenced by impact and effort — start with the cheapest, highest-leverage fix.
Audit and remove AI-crawler blocks (the cheapest, highest-impact fix). Ship or repair JSON-LD and a fresh sitemap. Publish llms.txt.
Build decision-shaped category content for the unbranded "best X" questions. Consolidate fragmented domains. Instrument owned-citation share as a tracked KPI.
Earn third-party / category-authority inclusion. Stand up agentic commerce (UCP/MCP) with real product and offer data. Extend the program to vernacular.
India's AI moment is now
62 of 100 brands cite themselves 0% of the time in their category. The brands that unblock the engines, structure their content, and publish the category answer first will compound an advantage that is, today, almost entirely unclaimed.
